Jeff, Kurt and I at our front row seats at Fenway Park in Boston.

This month we are enjoying time with family, friends and our support team back in Virginia. Our schedule is packed with only a few days free in the entire month. This week, I was able to use my free day to travel to Boston with my brothers and enjoy a game from front row seats. (The bottom of the AL East Red Sox beat the Yankees with a walk off hit to end the game.)

Yep, we’re blessed more than we deserve.

One of the best seats I’ve ever had to a sporting event…

Restore, REDEEM, Release

Our ministry in Guatemala can be boiled down to three words: Restore, Redeem and Release. This is the second of three posts designed to share with you how these three verbs are fleshed out.

Clay helping with the construction of a house in Barrio de la Cruz.

Providing for physical needs is important. It is part of the restoration process.

Water, food, shelter, education are all life-sustaining things. But none of them offer the full and abundant life that Jesus offers. In a very brief conversation with a woman at a well, Jesus remarked:

“If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water…Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.” (John 4:10, 13-14)

Our hope is to not only provide for physical needs, (After all, isn’t this why the woman came to that well in Samaria in the first place?) but for the deeper spiritual needs as well.

VBS in Santiago Zamora is one of the key pieces of our work with Redeemer’s House.

Once a week a small home in Santiago Zamora is transformed into a kid ministry center. About 40 kids show up looking for that water that Jesus talks about in John 4. Sure, some show up for the music, others for the games and all for the snack, but like the Samaritan woman, they leave with so much more.

Each week they are given the opportunity to have their lives redeemed. They get to step into a life that Jesus promises to be “full and abundant” and with this exchange, they receive hope.

The physical side of our ministry is important, the spiritual component essential. Together they are life-changing.

Melinda Evans arriving at IAD from the ATL.

The bond that is forged with friends on the mission field is strong. When you’ve served in the “trenches” alongside close friends, the shared experiences and emotional bonds are unmatched.

That is why Maureen and Melinda’s faces cannot hide the unfettered joy that they felt right there near baggage claim #6 in Dulles International Airport this week.

I always knew there was a reason that Jesus sent the disciples out to do ministry in twos. We are designed to work and serve together and the depth of our international friendships puts flesh on this valuable ministry principle.

If you think about it, please pray for Melinda’s family as they prepare for their third international adoption which will be quickly followed by their establishing a new ministry with Food for the Hungry in the Dominican Republic this Fall.

(RHI) Photo of the Week

As of tomorrow, September 1, 2012, the Erickson family will officially be a part of a young ministry here in Guatemala: Redeemer’s House International.

Change is rarely easy, but as we move into this new phase of our life and ministry here in Guatemala, we could not be more excited. The Radfords, our dear friends who founded RHI, share our similar vision for family and ministry and have a great heart for the Guatemalan people. We can’t wait for you to meet them!

Photos of the Week will show up every week in our Friday posts on Mission Erickson dot com. Our hope is that each weekly POTW helps you to better connect with our ministry in Guatemala. Enjoy.
