Prioritizing relationships over program is a key principle of our ministry here in Guatemala. This value seems simple at first, but proves to be challenging in any culture.
For me, it would always be easier to produce a program than to invest in a relationship. Programs are controllable, systematic and have a beginning and an end. Relationships are often erratic, follow no real pattern and can continue for long periods of time.
I am reminded of Paul’s words to the Thessalonians as he recalls his ministry and relationship with them: “…Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well.”
The gospel was important to Paul but this passage shows us that it was in the context of sharing his life, that the gospel was talked about. It was when they shared meals together, worked together, walked together and laughed together that they also talked about the deeper things of life.
Our hope with our ministry is that we will pursue relationships and in the natural course of those relationships we will share what is important to us.
We desire for our relationship with Jesus to intersect with our relationships with people. This should be a natural result as we live out II Thessalonians 2:8.
